Flaking occurs when paint breaks off in small flakes, typically along edges or corners. Properly sanding and priming surfaces, allowing sufficient dry time, and choosing high-quality paint will effectively prevent flaking. Ultimately, most paint failures share root causes like underlying moisture problems, poor workmanship, and non-compliance with SANS 10400 guidelines for finishes. To fix these failures, you must identify the root cause, scrape away the damaged paint, repair the underlying plaster or leak, and repaint using a professional approach.
